Eclipse forecast: Will the sky be clear on Saturday? AUSTIN (KXAN) — We're less than a week away from the first of two solar eclipses due to grace the skies over Central Texas. In April 2024, a total solar eclipse will plunge much of the area into darkness, but this Saturday, October 14 an "annular eclipse" will provide parts of Central Texas with a "ring of fire" view around the moon. An annular eclipse is different from a total solar eclipse, because at no time during an annular eclipse is the sun completely blocked, but in the path of annularity the moon is directly in the middle of the sun with light surrounding the moon like a halo. In a total solar eclipse, you'll see the sun completely blocked by the moon. FIRST WARNING WEATHER UNIVERSITY: THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ECLIPSES Where's the best viewing on Saturday? For most of us, drive south or west if you want to see the annular eclipse at its best, but for those of you in parts of the Hill Country you can stay right where you are!Path of Annular Eclipse over Central TexasNational...

A union strike interrupts Minnesota United’s final game of season in St. Paul Union workers in the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 745 had not gone on strike since they began organizing in Minnesota nearly 15 years ago.Until Saturday.Roughly 40 members of IATSE union picketed outside Allianz Field as an estimated 10-12 union workers did not report for their in-stadium shift at Minnesota United’s final MLS regular-season match in St. Paul. Those dozen unionized employees serve as camera operators, replay operators, technical directors and in other roles during Loons’ home matches. An estimated 30 more workers with the TV crew honored the strike and did not cross the picket line, which kept the Loons’ 5-2 win over Los Angeles Galaxy from streaming on Apple TV’s Season Pass. The IATSE union is looking for roughly 4% annual wage increases and a $50/shift health-care contribution for each person that works these games. With fewer than 20 match days, the total cost has been estimated at roughly $12,000, according to Charl...

Wild’s preseason power play looked mild

Wild’s preseason power play looked mild The Wild’s power play was on fire for three months last season before falling off a cliff after January, a weakness that contributed to Minnesota’s first-round playoff loss to Dallas, when they were outscored 9-4 with the man advantage. There were reasons for that, among them losing Joel Eriksson Ek, who had 12 goals among 23 power-play goals before an Evgeni Malkin slapshot fractured his fibula on April 6. He tried to play against Dallas in the postseason but couldn’t complete one shift.Still, special teams scoring was such a conspicuous absence late last season that the Wild went out and hired Jason King, who was running the Canucks’ power play in Vancouver, to take charge of theirs this season. Is it ready for Thursday’s regular-season opener against Florida at Xcel Energy Center? After six preseason games, the results have been underwhelming — the Wild were 4 for 23 (17 percent) while going 5-1 — but the full NHL lineup played only in the last two games, finally scoring with a man ...

San Jose State football: Spartans have a problem

San Jose State football: Spartans have a problem San Jose State running back Kairee Robinson was talking about one game, but he could have been talking about any of the last three.“It’s a four-quarter game,” Robinson said Saturday night after a 35-27 loss at Boise State. “I guess we got complacent. We came out doing our thing in the first half, but in the second half we weren’t striking on all cylinders.”In the last three games, all losses, the Spartans have been outscored 56-7 in the second half. Their only second-half points came three weeks ago at Toledo. They led this game 27-7 in the second quarter.“I don’t have an answer for what happened to us in the second half tonight, but we didn’t help ourselves at all,” coach Brent Brennan said. “We didn’t score any points and we didn’t stop them. And that is just heartbreaking.”The Spartans (1-5) will need to win five of their six remaining games to qualify for a bowl game The first step is to win next Saturday on the road against New Mexico (2-3), a team whose only wins are aga...

McCarthy ouster, death of Feinstein zaps California clout on Capitol Hill

McCarthy ouster, death of Feinstein zaps California clout on Capitol Hill  The recent death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and this week’s ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the Speakership has deprived California of a wide swath of legislative and political clout, leaving the state looking to up-and-comers in Congress to fill big shoes. The loss of the two, coupled with Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) own exit from the Speakership late last year, has shaken up the state — and put it in an unfamiliar position. It has long relied on top members, especially Feinstein, to bring dollars and projects home; Feinstein served in the Senate from 1992 until her death last month.“She set a tremendous standard for what it means for a United States senator to represent California,” Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) told The Hill. “And to serve here in the Senate, I can only pray that I come anywhere close to live up to the standard that she set.” “It is impossible to overstate the impact she’s had on California,” Padilla also told reporters Wednesda...

Quigley recovers from double bogey to win on PGA Tour Champions JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Brett Quigley had to work a lot harder than he imagined Sunday to win again on the PGA Tour Champions.
