On 10 March, the European Commission and the High Representative adopted a Joint Communication on an enhanced EU Maritime Security Strategy to ensure a peaceful use of the seas and safeguard the maritime domain against new threats. They have also adopted an updated Action Plan through which the Strategy will be implemented.Maritime security is vital to the European Union and its Member States. Together, the EU's Member States form the largest combined exclusive economic zone in the world. The EU economy depends greatly on a safe and secure ocean. Up to 99% of global data flows are transmitted through undersea cables. The global maritime domain must be secure to unlock the full potential of the oceans and the sustainable blue economy. The EU intends to reinforce the wide range of tools it has at its disposal to promote maritime security, both civilian...Alexei Navalny’s Stanford daughter honors dad on Oscars stage

PHOENIX (AP) — Joey Meneses hit two homers, including a crucial three-run shot in the fourth inning, to lead Mexico to an 11-5 win over the United States in the World Baseball Classic on Sunday at Chase Field.Meneses got the sellout crowd of 47,534 — mostly cheering for Mexico — on its feet in the first inning with his first homer, which gave Mexico a 2-0 lead. Those cheers got even louder in the fourth for his encore, which was a blast deep into the left-center seats that brought home Randy Arozarena and Alex Verdugo and made it 7-1.Meneses hit his first homer off starter Nick Martinez, who took the loss, and the second off Brady Singer. Mexico starter Patrick Sandoval gave up one run over three innings, earning the win.The 30-year-old Meneses became an unlikely MLB slugger in 2022 after spending over a decade in the minors and playing overseas. He debuted with the Nationals last season, batting .324 with 13 homers in just 222 at-bats.Mexico kept piling onto the lead in the eighth,...NCAA Tournament Glance

LONDON — HSBC has acquired the British assets of the now-defunct Silicon Valley Bank, the U.K. Treasury announced today. No U.K. taxpayer money is involved, and customer deposits have been protected, according to the announcement. The news provides a welcome relief to local startups and venture capitalists who had spent the weekend worrying about their futures after the American bank collapsed.“Today the government and the Bank of England have facilitated a private sale of Silicon Valley Bank UK; this ensures customer deposits are protected and can bank as normal, with no taxpayer support,” Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, the United Kingdom’s treasury chief, said in a statement. The U.K. deposits of the California bank are estimated to be worth a combined $7 billion.“I said yesterday that we would look after our tech sector, and we have worked urgently to deliver that promise,” Hunt said.HSBC saw off competition from other rivals, including the Bank of London, looking...US Treasury, regulators unveil bank rescue plan to stem crisis

WASHINGTON — U.S. federal authorities took aggressive action Sunday to end days of global uncertainty and panic, agreeing to backstop all depositors for two failed lenders — and to prevent runs on any other financial institutions. The Treasury Department, Federal Reserve and FDIC vowed that taxpayers would not bear losses from the moves to bolster the depositors at the two shuttered lenders, Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. The agencies said Silicon Valley Bank’s depositors would have access to all their money on Monday. In a stunning move, the Fed also announced that it would offer cash loans of up to a year for any bank putting up safe collateral — an action that in theory would allow banks to handle deposit withdrawals of any amount. The goal: to reassure people that they don’t need to take their money out at all.The agencies were praised by lawmakers from both parties for taking swift action to stem a financial panic. But Federal Financial Analytics managing partner Karen P...Latest news
