Dale Katechis is no stranger to turning his hobbies into businesses. The founder of Oskar Blues Brewery – and namesake of Dale’s Pale Ale – was already a restaurateur when he decided in 2002 to turn one of his favorite pastimes, homebrewing, into part of his business. The decision worked out, to put it mildly. Oskar Blues grew quickly, acquiring other beer makers and eventually becoming one of the largest craft brewers in the country, with production facilities in three states. Monster Energy bought the company in 2022.But he wasn’t done there. Katechis, an avid mountain biker, also started his own boutique bike manufacturer, REEB Cycles, to help further his love of riding on dirt roads. Other investments have included a hobby farm in Boulder County and cannabis companies. So, it’s no surprise that his latest passion, a sport he took up about a year ago, is the impetus for his newest venture, an indoor pickleball club and gathering space in Longmont.Oskar Blues founder Dale Katechis, ...Aspen hotel taps Death & Co. creators for new restaurant and rooftop bar

The Denver City Council approved next year’s $4 billion budget on Monday, capping a process that saw an assertive, progressive-leaning council push hard for — and win — more money for renters at risk of losing their housing. It was the first budget crafted by new Mayor Mike Johnston and six of the 13 council members. The give and take took on a distinctly different feel from previous budget debates, which usually ended with the mayor’s office winning out on spending priorities — with a smaller exception last year.Nowhere was the council’s impact felt more than in funding for the city’s rental assistance program, which more than doubled from a $12.6 million allocation in Johnston’s September budget proposal to $29.1 million by the time the plan was finalized Monday.Third-term Councilwoman Stacie Gilmore, who was in the thick of that push, nodded to the council’s more aggressive stance before Monday afternoon’s unanimous vote ...Denver City Council resurrects joint city-school committee with blessing from DPS leaders

The Denver City Council on Monday finalized its reactivation of a joint Denver Public Schools and city advisory committee with the blessing of DPS leaders, who earlier had protested the move. The council’s unanimous vote sets up that body, known as the City-School Coordinating Committee, to hold its first meeting early next year.Topics envisioned by Councilwomen Amanda Sandoval and Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez, the two co-sponsors of the bill, include youth violence prevention, the city’s housing crisis and other issues that impact DPS families and the broader community alike.“I felt it was time to have a better mechanism to be able to meet and convene with Denver Public Schools,” Sandoval said of the ordinance she began working on in August, kicking off an at-times contentious back-and-forth with district leaders.Concerns included the pace at which the ordinance was crafted and the perception that the body could be a mechanism for the city to exert more control ...Here’s why cranberries are more than just a Thanksgiving side dish

Canned or cooked cranberries? That’s a good opening question on Thanksgiving when seated next to your cousin twice removed. Go ahead and ask while the dish is being passed. Hopefully you both like each other’s answer. What version did you grow up with? Maybe you turned up your nose or shook your head with the “no way” universal food language of “please remove that red concoction from the house.”Let’s step back a little before we pass too much judgment on this traditional holiday side dish. We all agree that cranberries look pretty; they’re shiny, red and just the right size to pop in your mouth. But a raw cranberry can be bitterly tart eaten straight up. On the bright side, as a kid when you saw the bags of cranberries show up in the grocery store, you knew Thanksgiving was getting close and Christmas was not far behind.First, the name. The Internet says “cranberry” was originally called “craneberry,” in 1647, so named after...Palo Alto takes top spot in 2023 holiday budget rankings

The holiday shopping season is fast approaching, and nearly 1 in 4 Americans are still working to pay off holiday debt from last year. That means careful budgeting is essential this year, but people in some cities can afford to spend more than others.Palo Alto, CA has the highest average holiday budget of 2023 among small cities, while Bellevue, WA tops the list for medium-sized cities and San Francisco ranks first among large cities, according to a new report by the personal-finance website WalletHub. The report compared over 550 U.S. cities across five key dimensions: income, age, debt-to-income ratio, monthly income-to-expenses ratio, and savings-to-expenses ratio.“Palo Alto, CA has the highest holiday budget among the more than 550 cities we analyzed, at $3,596, in large part because residents earn nearly twice as much as they have to pay in expenses each month. Palo Alto residents are also among the best in the nation at money management,” said Cassandra Happe, WalletHub analys...Safety & CBD — Is CBD Oil A Safe Supplement For Everyone?

CBD supplements have become commonplace in supermarkets, health food stores, and eCommerce sites. Now that CBD has become ubiquitous in our culture, many assume it’s “safe” for everyone. Although CBD oil is generally well-tolerated by healthy adults, that doesn’t mean it’s a suitable option for every customer.
