“Starkweather” re-examines grisly 1950s murders by two teens | Book review

“Starkweather” re-examines grisly 1950s murders by two teens | Book review Even 65 years later, the name “Starkweather” brings chills.Charles “Charlie” Starkweather, 19, accompanied by his 14-year-old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, murdered 10 people in six days in Nebraska and Wyoming. He was America’s first contemporary mass killer, a psychopath who thought of himself as an outlaw and dreamed of going down in a blaze of glory in a shootout with the cops. When he was captured instead, he said he wanted to be put to death in the electric chair with Caril on his lap.Dr. James Melvin Reinhardt, left, professor of criminology at University of Nebraska, watches as Charles Starkweather, right, arrives at the Lincoln courthouse for another day of his first degree murder trial in Lincoln, Neb., May 29, 1958. Dr. Reinhardt sought the reason for Starkweather’s crime spree in extensive interviews with him, his family, friends and associates and by first hand observation. 5 best Colorado ski resorts for amateur snowboarders, ranked by a transplant

5 best Colorado ski resorts for amateur snowboarders, ranked by a transplant I thought I knew how to snowboard until I moved to Colorado.Growing up in the suburbs of New Orleans, La., I had a leg up on my fellow Southerners, at least. Both of my parents skied in Washington State where I was born, with my dad proposing to my mom by surprising her with an engagement ring in her ski goggles on Christmas 1994.I took snowboarding lessons as a teenager on family trips to Alpental ski resort near Seattle and Park City, Utah. That was sufficient enough to proclaim my love of the sport because, even as my gear gathered dust in the attic, many of my peers hadn’t even stepped foot in fresh snow before. Then, at the age of 26, I found a sublet in the Mile High City after accepting a reporting job at The Denver Post, with ski season already on the brain. Before I said goodbye to Washington, D.C., friends on the East Coast raved about the ski resorts dotted throughout the Centennial State, and my mom shipped decade-old equipment up to my new home. But as I befriended ...

How can Deion Sanders, CU Buffs push for Big 12 title and College Football Playoff in 2024? More steak, less sizzle. BOULDER — Do you believe now?Honestly? When it comes to Deion Sanders and his CU Buffs football program, that depends.Do you believe in Shedeur Sanders? Without a doubt. Do you believe in Travis Hunter? Twice on Sundays, where he’s gonna make a killing.Do you believe in the coaching staff? In the offensive line? In a defense that became a punch line on “Saturday Night Live?” Not so much. The glass is half … something. Compared to 1-11 and a national afterthought a year ago, the Buffs are clearly on a better path. But after a 3-0 start turned into 4-8, there’s still a long, long, long way to go.Which begs the question: Is there enough time on Coach Prime’s internal clock — always ticking — to get there, as soon as next fall?“What Deion has proven in Year 1 is that it’s possible,” former Buffs football coach and CBS Sports football analyst Rick Neuheisel told The Denver Post earlier this month. “It’s been a t...
