Ukrainian refugees are scarce in Colorado

DENVER (KDVR) -- Ukraine produced one of the biggest populations of refugees in the world in 2022, but few have landed in Colorado. Last year set a global record for the number of refugees and asylum seekers fleeing disasters and conflicts in their home nations, according to a United Nations report. "In 2022, the number of people forcibly displaced by persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing public order grew by 21% standing at an estimated 108.4 million at the end of the year," the report reads. Double shooting downtown after Nuggets parade At the end of 2022, most of the people in refugee-like situations came from just 10 countries. Syria produced more than any other country, 6.5 million overall. Another 5.7 million came from Ukraine, 5.7 million from Afghanistan and 5.5 million from Venezuela. Witnesses were stunned to see the takedown of a man’s arrest in Lauderhill and even more shocked at what they heard from officers. “I heard him screaming that’s what I noticed first,” said a resident who did not want to be identified. She said it was the screaming that led her to grab her phone and start recording Thursday morning, at first from her window.A man was taken down by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and their K-9, assisted by Lauderhill police.“He started screaming louder and louder so I went outside from the patio,” continued the witness. A family was heartbroken after their baby was born with a host of medical challenges, but the child’s future is much brighter after a stranger provided the gift of life.Two-year-old Noah Langlois is leaving Holtz Children’s Hospital on Thursday following a stay of a year and three months. Noah was born premature and hardly weighed a pound. He spent the next 207 days in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.As he turned 1, his mother found a strange lump on his stomach.It turned out to be a tumor that covered most of his liver. The tumor was so big, it was very difficult for the toddler to breathe and eat.“He, unfortunately at that time, had a lot of odds stacked against him. For one thing, he had been a preemie child. Police are investigating a shooting in a Miramar neighborhood that sent an 18-year-old victim and an infant to the hospital.7Skyforce hovered above the scene along the 8000 block of West Heather Lane, near Palm Avenue, just after 6:10 p.m., Thursday.The infant was seen with her head bandaged as she was being carried into the back of a Miramar Fire Rescue truck, presumably by her mother.Video also showed several paramedics hoisting the gurney where the older victim lay and wheeling it into an ambulance.Police believe the shooting was domestic in nature. A 54-year-old man was arrested for the murder of Laurie MacLellan, 59, in Manchester, New Hampshire, officials said.Robert Eastman was charged with second degree murder following an investigation in MacLellan’s death. Manchester police responded to Hanover Street around 2 a.m. Thursday morning where they found the victim with apparent stab wounds dead at the scene. A murder suspect was taken into custody Thursday after he allegedly led police on a chase and later crashed into another car in Raynham, leaving one of the car’s occupants with serious injuries, state police announced. State police said troopers initially saw David Lynch, 24, sitting in a BMW SUV in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn hotel in Middleborough around 3 p.m.When approached, police said Lynch rammed a pair of police vehicles and fled onto Route 44. The Denver Nuggets championship parade on Thursday was overshadowed by reports of a gunman wounding multiple victims, as well as an incident involving a police officer being hit by a firetruck.Two shooting victims were hospitalized and are currently in critical condition, said Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas during a press conference later in the day.Thomas said the shooting is believed to have been a targeted attack, and was unrelated to the parade celebration.Meanwhile, the officer whose leg was caught under the firetruck in a separate incident was identified as Sgt.
