Asylum seeker deal between U.S. and Canada won’t stop drama at border, advocates say

MONTREAL — The new asylum seeker agreement between Canada and the United States will not deter migrants from trying to cross into Canada outside official ports of entry, Quebec immigration advocacy groups say.Restricting access to the border and preventing migrants from accessing a safe pathway into the country will only incentivize bad-faith actors, said Abdulla Daoud, executive director of Montreal-based The Refugee Centre.“This type of decision-making … in the past has led to the creation of many human traffickers and smuggling rings,” Daoud said in an interview on Friday. “Canada never really had to deal with that too much. But now I think we’re going to see the numbers increase because these individuals are not going to go away.”The deal was announced on Friday during U.S. President Joe Biden’s trip to Ottawa. It was described in U.S. documents as a “supplement” to the 2004 treaty known as the Safe Third Country Agreement. VANCOUVER — A breeding colony of blue herons in Vancouver’s Stanley Park is anything but normal; it’s a noisy, busy place with many human activities, yet experts say the birds somehow thrive. It’s this time of the year when the Pacific great blue herons are seen high up in the treetops at Stanley Park, screeching, flapping their broad wings and bringing sticks to impress potential mates. The herons, which were first documented in Stanley Park in 1921, are returning to the park’s rookery high above the tennis courts where they’llcourt, build nests, lay eggs and parent their chicks. Nadia Xenakis, an Urban Wildlife Programs coordinator at the Stanley Park Ecology Society, said it’s mating season and the public gets a front-row seat to the ritual of male herons carrying sticks to the nest of a possible mate. If she weaves the stick into the nest, she’s attracted; if she drops the stick to the ground, he’s out, Xenakis explained. Stanley Park’s c...Daily horoscope for March 25, 2023

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My fiance and I are getting married next year and so far, everything is coming together smoothly. The only issue I have is how to tell our guests — without sounding like a bridezilla — that there will be a very strict “no cellphones” policy during the ceremony. They can have their phones out during the reception all they want, but I want them to keep them far away from the ceremony! Both of us are very laid-back and tend to go with the flow, but whenever I see people taking pictures and videos during wedding ceremonies instead of actually being in the moment with the happy couple, it fills me with rage! I mean, that’s what the paid photographer is for, right?!No one, and I mean no one, on social media really cares about the 200 photos you posted from a wedding for people your followers/friends don’t even know. The people who care about the event will already be at the ceremony. So why even bother?I absolutely do not want our very ...Mueren al menos 7 personas después de que un tornado y tormentas dañinas azotaron Mississippi

The Biden administration may allow European companies to share in billions of dollars in U.S. tax incentives for electric vehicles if the two sides can reach a trade deal in the next few weeks, a senior administration official said Friday — a move that could help ease a major source of transatlantic friction. No such concessions for Europe will be included in a long-awaited proposed guidance that the Treasury Department will release for the incentives next week, the official told POLITICO after being granted anonymity to discuss sensitive deliberations. But ongoing talks between the U.S. and EU could produce an agreement allowing vehicles that include European minerals to qualify for the full extent of the tax breaks, the person said. Those vehicles would still have to be made in North America. The talks address one of the central tension points of the massive climate law that President Joe Biden signed last year — its attempt to combat climate change by encouraging the ...India’s Rahul Gandhi accuses PM Modi of favoring Adani Group

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s top opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said he was being targeted because he has raised serious questions about Modi’s relationship with the Indian business conglomerate Adani Group.Gandhi said the objective of his expulsion from Parliament on Friday was to prevent him from speaking in the legislature about his allegation of an infusion of an unaccounted $3 billion into shell companies owned by the Adani Group, headed by Gautam Adani.’’Some of these defense companies are working in drone and missile development and ordnance production. Why is the defense ministry not asking questions,” he said.Gandhi was expelled from Parliament a day after a court convicted him of defamation and sentenced him to two years in prison for mocking the surname Modi in an election speech. The actions against Gandhi, the great-grandson of India’s first prime minister, were widely condemned by opponents of ...Intel co-founder, philanthropist Gordon Moore dies at 94

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Gordon Moore, the Intel Corp. co-founder who set the breakneck pace of progress in the digital age with a simple 1965 prediction of how quickly engineers would boost the capacity of computer chips, has died. He was 94.Moore died Friday at his home in Hawaii, according to Intel and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.Moore, who held a Ph.D. in chemistry and physics, made his famous observation — now known as “Moore’s Law” — three years before he helped start Intel in 1968. It appeared among a number of articles about the future written for the now-defunct Electronics magazine by experts in various fields. The prediction, which Moore said he plotted out on graph paper based on what had been happening with chips at the time, said the capacity and complexity of integrated circuits would double every year.Strictly speaking, Moore’s observation referred to the doubling of transistors on a semiconductor. But over the years, it has been applied to hard drives, co...Ask Amy: I was mortified when they saw we had swiped their wine
