More than two feet of snow hits parts of Mass. during nor’easter, warmer weather ahead The nor’easter storm slamming New England left some communities in central and western Massachusetts with over two feet of snow Tuesday, knocking out power to thousands and causing travel disruptions on area roads.Where impacts were severe in some high-elevation areas, this week’s nor’easter brought lower snow totals in other spots, leaving only wet roads for much of the day in the Boston metro area and in communities south of Boston.  Towns like Ashby, Hubbardston, and Fitchburg saw inches falling by the hour, each racking up over 20 inches of snow as plows attempted to tackle loads of heavy, wet snow.Further west, communities like Franklin County’s Rowe came closer to three feet of snow, totaling 30 inches, according to reports from the National Weather Service. Other notable totals from the region included Hampshire County’s Chesterfield with 26.5 inches and Goshen with 22.The snowfall appeared to drop off to the south and to the east, with largely sin...

San Francisco board open to reparations with $5M payouts By JANIE HAR (Associated Press)SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Payments of $5 million to every eligible Black adult, the elimination of personal debt and tax burdens, guaranteed annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years and homes in San Francisco for just $1 a family. These were some of the more than 100 recommendations made by a city-appointed reparations committee tasked with the thorny question of how to atone for centuries of slavery and systemic racism. And the San Francisco Board of Supervisors hearing the report for the first time Tuesday voiced enthusiastic support for the ideas listed, with some saying money should not stop the city from doing the right thing. Several supervisors said they were surprised to hear pushback from politically liberal San Franciscans apparently unaware that the legacy of slavery and racist policies continues to keep Black Americans on the bottom rungs of health, education and economic prosperity, and overrepresented in prisons and homeless popul...

Column: After adding 5 new starters, Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles can wait for prices to fall in free agency The money didn’t stop flowing Tuesday, but the action was much more subdued than the day before, when the NFL’s negotiating window opened — all leading to the start of free agency at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The Chicago Bears were one of the more active teams Monday, agreeing to terms with four players just three days after general manager Ryan Poles traded the No. 1 draft pick to the Carolina Panthers for a package that includes wide receiver D.J. Moore.Add it all up and even before the new league year begins the Bears have five new starters — and likely will be seeking another five or six. Moore and weak-side linebacker Tremaine Edmunds are the highest-profile of the group, which also includes middle linebacker T.J. Edwards, guard Nate Davis and defensive end DeMarcus Walker. It’s neither surprising nor alarming the Bears didn’t have more additions Tuesday after Poles and coach Matt Eberflus spent the morning at Northwestern’s pro day, where they w...

Despite objections, Chevron says it reported oil price data

Despite objections, Chevron says it reported oil price data SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Chevron said on Tuesday it reported how much money it made in January from selling gasoline in California, disclosing the data after regulators threatened to fine the company for not following a new law aimed at investigating the cause of the state’s high gas prices. The law requires oil companies to report their monthly “gross refining margin,” the difference between how much refineries paid for crude oil and how much the company sold it for as gasoline. State lawmakers and regulators believe the data will give them a clearer picture of what has driven sharp increases in California’s gas prices, which are consistently the highest in the nation. Chevron spokesperson Ross Allen said the company filed a “revised response” late Tuesday afternoon with regulators that included the data required by law. He said the company was never out of compliance with the law, noting they began reporting the data March 2 — the deadline for oil companies to report J...
