California police watchdog will soon receive tidal wave of misconduct records, and recent reprimands spell trouble for impugned Antioch cops

Under the terms of a new California law, more than 50 police officers across the state have been suspended or outright banished from the profession this year for alleged misconduct — and a batch of Southern California officers on the list could hint at what is to come for Antioch officers who allegedly sent racist text messages.Meanwhile, the number of officers facing decertification is only expected to grow over the next few months. That’s because of a looming deadline for every law enforcement agency in California — except the prison system — that will require police departments to turn over three years of records on police misconduct allegations to the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, or POST. The watchdog commission has the power to take away an officer’s certification, making him or her ineligible for employment at any law enforcement agency statewide.A recently enacted state law, SB 2, requires that police agencies send this firs...San Jose’s Fresh Prince: Sharks take offensive-minded center in NHL Draft

The San Jose Sharks selected Will Smith with the No. 4 overall pick in the first round of Wednesday’s NHL Draft in Nashville, Tennessee, taking a player they hope will someday be the franchise’s No. 1 centerman.Smith, 18, is considered a game-breaker who possesses terrific vision and hockey sense. He had 127 points in 60 games for the U.S. National under-18 team this past season — second in program history only to New Jersey’s Jack Hughes — and his skillset has drawn comparisons to Vancouver’s J.T. Miller and Anaheim’s Trevor Zegras.Patrick Marleau, who recently rejoined the Sharks organization as a player development coach and hockey operations advisor, made the draft announcement at Bridgestone Arena. The “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song played as Smith came to the stage to shake hands with Marleau, general manager Mike Grier, and other members of the Sharks’ front office.“I feel like I’ve got to add to the name,”...Man hospitalized after bee attack in Petaluma

(KRON) -- A man was hospitalized after he was attacked by a swarm of bees in Petaluma on Wednesday, North Bay Fire confirmed. The fire department responded to the report of a victim with bee stings and arrived to find a victim down in the roadway, said Kelly Bradley with North Bay Fire. He was treated by paramedics and taken to a Petaluma hospital. The man was flying model airplanes with others when the swarm attacked, per Bradley. He was still surrounded by bees when paramedics arrived. ‘Confrontation’ with police during search warrant leaves one dead in Richmond "He may have gone over to retrieve his plane, and there was a beekeeper out here, and the bees swarmed around that person where his plane had crashed," Bradley said. A witness of the attack described a similar situation. Victor Barbieri says the victim's model plane crashed in a field, and he drove his car over to get it. When he stepped out, the bees attacked.Barbieri said the victim "staggered" away and collapsed. He...Over 100 'Safe Parking' spaces now available for unhoused families in Mountain View

LOS ANGELES (AP) — What’s a World Cup without an anthem, a rallying song for fans around the world? In advance of the Women’s World Cup, running July 20 through Aug. 20, New Zealand alt-pop artist BENEE and Australian musician Mallrat have released “Do It Again,” the official song of this year’s tournament, which is hosted by their respective countries. They will perform the song at the opening ceremony at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, before the first match between New Zealand and Norway.“Do It Again” recalls the energetic, eclectic pop of both performers — like a marriage between BENEE’s 2020 viral hit, “Supalonely,” and Mallrat’s accessible experimentalism, found in the song “Groceries.”“Wake up / This is the start of it,” the women sing in the song’s ascendant chorus. “Head’s up / We’re coming home again.”Earlier this month, FIFA announced it will pay each player at the Women’s World Cup at least $30,000, and the 23 pla...Internet gambling would be given 5 more years under latest change in New Jersey

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Internet gambling in New Jersey would be allowed to take place for at least five more years under the latest proposal by state lawmakers. On Wednesday evening, legislators abandoned a move they made a day earlier to drastically cut the extension of internet casino gambling in the state. An original bill reauthorizing online betting would have given it another 10 years, but lawmakers sliced that to just two years on Tuesday. After an outcry from casinos, their political allies and business groups in southern New Jersey, lawmakers amended the bill yet again to extend internet gambling for five years. But the rationale for the original change — and its modification on Wednesday — remained a mystery to many in the seaside gambling resort. No explanation was given for either of the changes, and top Democratic leaders did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday and Wednesday. “We’re all trying to figure out what happened,” said Don Guardian, a Republican Assem...Latest news
