Bangladesh: The Scars of 21 August 2004 Photo courtesy: Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Nineteen years after the violent explosions at a political rally that claimed the lives of 22 people and left more than 200 injured, with many maimed for life, it is time to revisit the tragedy. There is a clear need behind such a revisit, given that since the appalling occurrence of 21 August 2004, nothing was done by the then government by way of an investigation of the crime to show that the guilty would be punished - writes Syed Badrul AhsanAt the time the tragedy occurred, a political government dominated by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its rightwing ally the Jamaat-e-Islami was in power. Strangely enough, the government demonstrated little inclination toward taking the issue seriously and indeed appeared to be creating an entire ground to have crime take a back seat to everything else.Murder of Ivy RahmanWhat became clear in August 2004 is that the grenade explosions that rocked the public rally of the Awami L...

Rights group says Saudi Arabian border guards fired on and killed hundreds of Ethiopian migrants DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Border guards in Saudi Arabia have fired machine guns and launched mortars at Ethiopians trying to cross into the kingdom from Yemen, likely killing hundreds of the unarmed migrants in recent years, Human Rights Watch said in a report released Monday. The rights group cited eyewitness reports of attacks by troops and images that showed dead bodies and burial sites on migrant routes, saying the death toll could even be “possibly thousands.”The United Nations has already questioned Saudi Arabia about its troops opening fire on the migrants in an escalating pattern of attacks along its southern border with war-torn Yemen. A Saudi government official, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak publicly, called the Human Rights Watch report “unfounded and not based on reliable sources,” without offering evidence to support the assertion. Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who allegedly make tens of thousands of dollars a week smuggling migr...

Poetry in motion: Kondwani Fidel is an ambassador in verse for Baltimore and the Orioles

Poetry in motion: Kondwani Fidel is an ambassador in verse for Baltimore and the Orioles Every Friday this year that the Orioles jog onto the field for another baseball game at Camden Yards, they bring a little piece of the Baltimore poet Kondwani Fidel with them.On a tag on the players’ new City Connect uniforms are words from one of Fidel’s poems: “YOU CAN’T CLIP THESE WINGS.” When closer Félix Bautista winds up to pitch, Fidel’s phrase stretches across The Mountain’s hips. When outfielder Austin Hays hits a home run, Fidel’s verse runs the bases.Talk about poetry in motion. The slogan was taken from a poem of Fidel’s in praise of his hometown that begins:“When the wells have almost run dry, and the hard times darken the sky, there’s a mantra we live by: ‘You can’t clip these wings.’”At age 30, Fidel is rapidly becoming Baltimore’s unofficial poet laureate, following in the iambic footsteps of Edgar Allan Poe in the 19th century and the comic poet Ogden Nash in the mid-...
