Police have arrested six men from the GTA, accused of operating an alleged million-dollar-worth gift card scam that investigators say targeted more than 50 people in the U.S.Investigators with York Regional Police say the probe began in February of this year when an elderly man got a pop-up message on his computer telling him that his computer security has been compromised.The man called the number shown on the pop-up message and was told to buy $22,000 in Home Depot gift cards.After providing the serial numbers of the gift cards to the suspects, police say the cards were redeemed at a store in Markham.York police investigators say with the assistance of Home Depot and the FBI, they were “able to identify over 50 confirmed victims across the United States who had fallen victim to the same suspects.”“All of the purchased gift cards had been redeemed by a small group of contractors in the Greater Toronto Area, with purchases totalling over $3 million,” police s...Weekend need-to-know: Winter markets and a carnival in Dundas Square

OTTAWA — The Canadian Real Estate Association says home sales fell in November as the average price of a home sold inched higher compared with a year ago.The association says November home sales fell 0.9 per cent compared with the same month last year.On a seasonally adjusted basis, November home sales were also down 0.9 per cent compared with October this year. CHICAGO (AP) — The family of a Chicago woman who froze to death after she became locked in a hotel freezer has agreed to a $10 million legal settlement.Kenneka Jenkins’ mother, Tereasa Martin, will receive about $3.7 million, according to court records made public Tuesday, the Chicago Tribune reported. Other family members will receive $1.2 million and $1.5 million. Another $3.5 million will cover attorney fees, with $6,000 covering the cost of Jenkins’ funeral.Jenkins was found dead in the walk-in freezer at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in suburban Rosemont in September 2017, a day after she attended a party there. The Cook County medical examiner’s office determined that she died of hypothermia and that her death was accidental.
