On a September evening in 1978, Harvey Milk left his home base in San Francisco’s Castro district, the epicenter of America’s gay rights movement, to venture out to the East Bay suburbs.Milk’s destination was Walnut Creek’s Northgate High, where he fought that era’s version of the culture wars and helped change the course of LGBTQ+ history in the final two months of his life. In front of a live TV audience, San Francisco’s first openly gay supervisor artfully debated John Briggs, a conservative Orange County state senator, who was pushing an initiative that would prevent LGBTQ+ teachers and their supporters from working in California’s public schools. It proved to be such a pivotal moment in gay rights history that the high school will commemorate it with a public ceremony on Monday, Oct. 16.News accounts show that the charismatic Milk crushed it in the debate, effectively countering Briggs’ claims that “homosexuals want your children.” Two months later, the “Mayor of Ca...Rublev beats Dimitrov to advance to Shanghai Masters final against Hurkacz

SHANGHAI (AP) — Seventh-ranked Andrey Rublev had mixed feelings after advancing to the final of the Shanghai Masters by beating Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (7), 6-3 on Saturday. “It’s not easy when you win matches against friends, because you feel both sides,” Rublev said. “You feel sad, but at the same time you want to win.”The fifth-seeded Rublev has not dropped a set this week but was pushed to the brink in the semifinals by the 18th-seeded Bulgarian in a high-tempo first set. Rublev saved a set point before eventually clinching a 76-minute opening set in a tiebreaker. The Russian player then rallied from 2-0 down in the second set to win six of the last seven games and advance to his fourth Masters final and a meeting with Hubert Hurkacz on Sunday. Earlier, Hurkacz served his way into the final with a dominant 6-3, 6-4 win over Sebastian Korda. The 17th-ranked Polish player was untouchable on serve and didn’t face a break point.Hurkacz sent down 14 aces and denied Korda, who beat c...A partial solar eclipse of the sun, the first stage of a rare “ring of fire” eclipse, is now visible over the Americas

BRUSSELS — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is facing criticism for not explicitly calling on Israel to respect international law in its war on Gaza during a trip to the country Friday.Von der Leyen, a German center-right politician, visited the Kfar Aza kibbutz where Hamas militants murdered scores of civilians in an attack last week that killed more than 1,300 Israelis. She also expressed unreserved solidarity with Israel on behalf of the European Union. But she is facing political backlash from lawmakers and diplomats for not speaking up about the humanitarian consequences of Israel’s retaliatory attacks on Hamas in Gaza, which have killed more than 1,900 Palestinians including many civilians.“She simply said Israel has the right to defend itself, full stop,” said a diplomat who spoke anonymously to speak freely. “That is not the line member states agreed.” On Tuesday, EU’s foreign ministers condemned attacks by Hamas but also “called for the protection of c...Two killed in Lexington overnight after crash involving wrong-way driver on I-95
