Denver students displaced by Manual High School’s closure in 2006 get their long-awaited diplomas — and an apology Shanita Lewis always hoped to receive a diploma from Denver’s Manual High School and, on Monday evening, it finally happened — more than a decade after the school temporarily closed and displaced hundreds of students. Lewis was one of 11 former Manual High students to receive honorary diplomas from Denver Public Schools during a meeting of the Board of Education. “It mattered that our school closed,” said Lewis, who was a freshman when Manual closed in 2006. She graduated from George Washington High School in 2009. “All these years later, it still has shaped and affected the lives of so many young adults.” The effort to have DPS award Manual High diplomas to any student affected by the closure has been underway at the district for at least a year. On Monday, DPS turned part of the evening’s school board meeting into a mini-graduation ceremony to honor former Manual students. Former Manual students, dressed in graduation caps, “walked” across a room at D...

Dallas moves on to play first-year Stars coach Pete DeBoer’s former team, the Vegas Golden Knights. Game 1 of the West final is Friday night in Las Vegas. DeBoer improved to 7-0 in Game 7s, this being the fourth different team he led to a win in the finale of a best-of-seven series that went the distance. Darryl Sutter and Scott Bowman are the only other coaches to do that. It was the fourth time in five seasons the Stars got a Game 7 — the others were all away from home. They hadn’t won a Game 7 at home since 2000, when they made the Stanley Cup Final. In the only other Game 7 they hosted at American Airlines Center, the Stars lost 6-1 to St. Louis in a second-round series in 2016. Golden Knights joins Rangers, Blues for historic NHL playoff starts LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Vegas Golden Knights have been making history since they broke into the league, and they made some more Sunday night. In defeating Edmonton 5-2 to win their playoff series in six games, the Golden Knights became the third team in NHL playoffs history to make the conference final four times in their first six seasons. The New York Rangers advanced at least that far their first seven seasons (1926-27 to 1932-33) and won the Stanley Cup twice. The St. Louis Blues made it four of their first five seasons (1967-68 to 1971-72).“I think Vegas is the most impressive of those,” Ontario-based hockey historian Eric Zweig said. “The fact that they’ve had to do it in a salary-cap era with a 32-team NHL and they’ve still done it. They’ve even had a couple setbacks. They haven’t just been onward and up. I still don’t know how they did it the first year. That’s miraculous to me that they actually kept up that 100-point pace all year long and made the Stanley Cup Final.”The ...

Striking Hollywood writers vow not to picket Tony Awards, opening the door to some kind of show NEW YORK (AP) — Striking members of the Writers Guild of America have said they will not picket next month’s Tony Award telecast, clearing a thorny issue facing show organizers and opening the door for some sort of Broadway razzle-dazzle on TV. The union last week denied a request by Tony organizers to have a waiver for their June 11 glitzy live telecast. It reiterated that in a statement late Monday, saying the guild “will not negotiate an interim agreement or a waiver for the Tony Awards.”But the guild gave some hope that some sort of Tony show might go on, saying organizers “are altering this year’s show to conform with specific requests from the WGA, and therefore the WGA will not be picketing the show.” What is being altered was not clear, but it may be to allow a non-scripted version of the Tonys to go on. The strike, which has already darkened late-night TV shows like “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert “and “Saturday...
