George Washington University board says some GWPD officers will begin carrying firearms Interim George Washington University President Mark Wrighton announced in a letter on Thursday that the Board of Trustees has directed the university to equip specially trained GW Police Department officers with firearms.Wrighton said the board has come to this decision “after more than a year of careful consideration and deliberation, review of safety data and best practices, and input from experts.”He also said the board partly made this decision in response to “too many tragic instances of mass gun violence in communities and on college campuses.” He cited the recent shootings at Michigan State University and the University of Virginia and that there “have been more than 140 mass shootings already in 2023,” according to the Gun Violence Archive.Wrighton also referenced the university’s setting in the middle of a densely populated city and how unarmed GWPD officers cannot respond to life-threatening incidents when weapons are involved. April snowfall makes for a snow-covered final weekend at Eldora Mountain BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) -- A higher-than-average snowpack has been good to ski areas around the state.The latest round of snowfall was a welcome sight for the Eldora Ski Mountain Resort, which will close for the season on Sunday."Snow coverage was decent all year long, we never got a big, whopping storm but we had a great, consistent coverage, two to three inches every couple of days," Sam Bass, at Eldora, said.That was enough snowfall to mark the end of a good year at the ski resort."It was better than last year," Bass said. "I think we ended up totaling about 200 inches, just over 200 inches this year. Last year was a little closer to 150." Loveland Ski patrollers form union for first time ever SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) -- Ski patrollers and paramedics at Loveland Ski Area voted to unionize with CWA 7781, the United Professional Ski Patrols of America, an organization supporting hundreds of ski patrollers.    This marks the first time in the 85 year-history of Loveland Ski Area that patrollers have formed a union. Freight train engines, cars derail and catch fire in Maine (AP) — Several cars on a freight train derailed and caught fire early Saturday in rural Maine, officials and the train operator said. Three workers were hurt, but their injuries were said not to be life-threatening.The Maine Forest Service said in a statement that three locomotive engines and six cars carrying lumber and electrical wiring went off the track at about 8:30 a.m. in Sandwich Academy Grant Township in Somerset County.They derailed into a wooded area and started a small forest fire, which emergency responders contained and were monitoring, the service said.
