High school football: Eagan stepped up level of competition, and continues to thrive

Eagan football coach Nick Johnson was admittedly “nervous” heading into the 2023 campaign. The Wildcats were fresh off a breakout 2022 season in which they won five games and hosted a Class 6A playoff game. But the message throughout the offseason was centered on not going backwards as a program. In no way was 2022 meant to be a one-year wonder. It was a building block from which the program could push off to even bigger and better things. But achieving such results would be no small feat in 2023. Because last year’s success moved Eagan into one of the premier subdistricts among the big schools — the Metro South. Back on Eagan’s slate were the likes of perennial powers Lakeville South and Lakeville North, along with rival Rosemount. That’s a steep increase from the level of competition faced last fall.“We got hot in the back half of the season, but we were beating teams that we should beat,” Johnson said. “Now just the names that these guys have played these teams forever, you k...Mushrooms found in containers, jars and bags at scene of Roseville double-murder suicide

Authorities investigating if hallucinogenic drugs played a part in last weekend’s double-murder suicide in a Roseville apartment found a large amount of mushrooms in several rooms, court records show.A search of the apartment Saturday morning by Roseville police investigators and Minnesota Bureau of Apprehension agents turned up one jar of mushrooms, and “suspected mushrooms” in six plastic containers, five jars, two bags, one bin and one box, according to an inventory report included in a search warrant application filed Tuesday in Ramsey County District Court.Eight jars and one plastic container of mushroom spawn were also found in the apartment located just south of County Road B and west of Snelling Avenue.Police said a motive for Saturday’s double-murder suicide has not been determined, but that “initial indications suggest hallucinogenic drugs may have been a contributing factor.”The inventory report did not say if the mushrooms were tested for the hallucinogenic chemical psil...Timberwolves forward Kyle Anderson can see again after eye scare

Kyle Anderson’s 2022-23 season ended in Game 4 of the Timberwolves’ first-round series against the Denver Nuggets back in April. There was brief concern his career might be over, too.Anderson was inadvertently clubbed in the eye by teammate Anthony Edwards when the two were both airborne.Anderson initially heard from a few people that he may not be able to play again.“I had to be strong for my family, really,” he said. “I think everybody in my family was kind of spooked, and I didn’t show them that I was spooked. But it was definitely tough.”But then Anderson went out to UCLA, where he attended college, to visit Dr. Stephen Schwartz. The first thing Schwartz told Anderson was the Wolves forward would indeed be able to play again.“Shoutout to him. He brought me a lot of comfort. From then on, I knew I’d be OK,” Anderson said. “But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared or nervous four, five, six days after the injury.”Anderson played for China in the World Cup last month, and n...Thanks to new $4 million donation, Walker West Music Academy in St. Paul could expand to new building by next year

Just minutes into his press conference that kicked off the team’s media day festivities, Timberwolves basketball boss Tim Connelly laid it out on the table for the team ahead of the 2023-24 season:“We’ve got to win a playoff series. It’s been way too long since we’ve had success in the postseason,” the Wolves’ president of basketball operations said. “Let’s be honest, we have to have success in the postseason for us to be taken seriously. No one seemed to balk when informed of the standard. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch reaffirmed the team’s goal is, indeed, to advance in the postseason.“That’s certainly our goal is to advance in the playoffs,” Finch said. “We’ve been there twice now.”The most recent appearance was a five-game first-round series loss to top-seeded Denver, the eventual NBA champion. Minnesota took a number of positives from that series, primarily that its short-handed roster gave the Nuggets as good a fight as anyone else during Denver’s run t...Police describe evidence gathered during Rabadi homicide investigation

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Testimony continued Thursday in the New Scotland murder trial. Jacob Klein is accused of killing Philip Rabadi in April 2022, just months after Rabadi married Klein's former girlfriend. Investigators described the timeline of Klein's arrest in court on Thursday. One of the biggest developments from the day's proceedings was the prosecution wanted to introduce Facebook messages dating back to March 2019. They were messages between Klein and Elena Radin, Rabadi's wife. The correspondence included discussions about the dog they once shared. Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! The prosecution said it would establish what type of relationship the two had. Klein objected on the basis of relevance. He said the messages are three years removed. The judge ultimately sustained the objection, so they were not allowed.Testimony was still heard that described what that relationship may have been like. The Republican impeachment inquiry into President Biden got off to a rocky start Thursday as the GOP sought to stress a need for the investigation while Democrats argued they had done little to advance the specter of wrongdoing by the man they aim to remove from office. Republicans sought to draw attention to evidence as sprawling as the probe itself, bouncing back and forth between reviewing Hunter Biden’s business dealings, communications with family members and associates, and the ongoing Justice Department investigation into his failure to pay taxes.Still, the bulk of what they reviewed dealt only with Hunter Biden, not his father, even as House Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) said “our investigation is now focused on whether President Biden engaged in impeachable offenses under the U.S. Constitution.”Comer wrapped the hearing saying the panel would issue a subpoena for Hunter Biden’s personal bank records as well as those of his companies.Democrats vac...Trump NY fraud trial to proceed after last-ditch effort to delay is denied

A last-ditch legal effort by former President Trump to delay the start of his civil fraud trial in New York was denied Thursday by the state's appellate division. The trial will proceed as planned Monday, barring any other roadblocks.A judge had issued a temporary pause in the sprawling civil case after Trump claimed the trial judge was ignoring an appellate ruling. The New York attorney general's office, which brought the case against Trump, called Trump's effort a “brazen and meritless attempt” to “usurp” the authority of Justice Arthur Engoron, the trial judge. The appeals court's order comes after Engoron found Trump liable for fraud Tuesday, ruling that New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) proved the core elements of her case against the former president and his businesses.Trump’s business empire was imperiled by the decision, which stripped some of the former president’s business licenses and raised the potential for him to lose control of some of his famed pr...Jury trial scheduled for Daniel Riley, accused in Janae Edmondson crash

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis issued an executive order Thursday directing state officials to prepare a plan to keep the state’s four national parks open through a potential government shutdown, days before their potential closure. With Republican infighting so far thwarting any congressional budget deal, the federally managed parks in Colorado — Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, the Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde and Rocky Mountain National Park — will close just after midnight on Sunday, Polis wrote. That could happen on a particularly busy weekend for Rocky Mountain during leaf-peeping season.Polis’ order directs the state’s Department of Natural Resources and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to develop a plan and identify potential funding needs to keep the parks open through a federal shutdown.State officials here and elsewhere have worked to keep parks open through shutdowns before.
