Jamie Dettmer is opinion editor at POLITICO Europe. Eight years ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin labeled the murder of opposition leader Boris Nemtsov a disgrace.“The most serious attention should be paid to high-profile crimes, including those with political motives,” he told officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. “We need to finally rid Russia of disgraces and tragedies like the one that we have recently endured and seen. I mean the murder, the provocative murder, of Boris Nemtsov right in the center of the capital,” he added. The apparent assassination of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin didn’t happen on the streets of Moscow near the Kremlin though — it was in the skies, a few hundred kilometers northwest of the Russian capital. But it was every bit a lesson for others to heed.It is always instructive to observe how Putin reacts to the latest high-profile assassination. Greece is searching for scapegoats as Europe’s largest wildfire spins out of control. On Monday, firefighters struggled for a 10th consecutive day to contain flames ravaging the northeastern Evros region, where multiple blazes have formed a deadly inferno. Authorities say the initial fire near the port town of Alexandropoulis was likely sparked by lightning. But while anger grows over insufficient prevention efforts and emergency services beg for reinforcements, much of Greece is preoccupied with finding someone to blame. Leading Greek politicians have sought to focus the nation’s attention on catching arsonists, with some even spreading conspiracy theories about who set the fires. Vassilis Kikilias, minister for civil protection, blamed “lowlife arsonists” for the fires in a furious televised speech last week. “You are committing a crime against the country, you will not get away with it, we will find you, you will be held accountable,” he said. It’s shaping up to be the political bun-fight of the year. The battle to become the next head of the European Investment Bank is heating up, setting up a clash between two of Europe’s best-known politicians with a background in finance. Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s outgoing competition chief, and Nadia Calviño, Spain’s finance minister, are vying for the top job at the increasingly important Luxembourg-based lender, which doles out billions of euros in loans to infrastructure projects each year, including rebuilding work in Ukraine. Like all EU fights, the political horse-trading doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Behind the scenes, finance ministers are already making calculations about how the EIB contest filters into the big carve-up of the EU jobs pie next year, when new commissioners will be appointed after the European election in June. France’s position is likely to prove particularly significant. Paris has long been frustrated with Vestager, who took a positi...Bicyclist killed in crash in Newton
