House GOP push to impeach Biden runs into Senate GOP

By Annie Grayer, Manu Raju and Melanie Zanona | CNNHouse Republicans are not only facing resistance from within their own ranks to impeach President Joe Biden, they’re also getting a cool reception from another key constituency: Senate Republicans. The concerns raised from lawmakers across the Capitol – who would be the jury in an impeachment trial if it came to that – adds another layer of GOP opposition, and further exposes that Republicans are not unified in their pursuit of impeaching Biden.Republicans in the Senate are nervous that the push to impeach could backfire politically and give Biden a boost – all the while distracting from their efforts to paint the president as out of touch on the economy. Moreover, a number of Senate Republicans liken the Biden impeachment efforts to the two impeachments of then-President Donald Trump that they sharply criticized, even though the situations are markedly different. And some are deeply skeptical that House Republicans have gathered enou...Could the Oakland Roots soccer team play a role in the future of the Coliseum site?

OAKLAND — The Roots SC, a popular men’s minor-league soccer franchise, wants to return to Oakland, the city that is represented in the team’s name and logos but not where it currently plays soccer games. On Tuesday, city officials will begin reviewing the terms of an agreement that would allow the Roots to build a temporary 10,000-seat stadium on the largely unused Malibu parking lot, a triangular space directly adjacent to the giant Coliseum complex in deep East Oakland. After forming in the late 2010s, the Roots emerged as a prominent community attraction, and until recently played its games at Oakland’s Laney College, south of Lake Merritt. But earlier this year, the franchise skipped town to a stadium at Cal State East Bay, citing a last-minute snafu involving the turf at the Laney field. It now plans to remain a half-hour drive south in Hayward for the entire 2024 season. In the meantime, the team hopes to work through negotiations with the city, plus the lo...‘Brady Bunch’ house sells for $3.2 million, a 9% loss for HGTV

The Los Angeles Chargers’ offense showed signs of improvement during the season opener in the areas coach Brandon Staley pointed to throughout the offseason. The same can’t be said about Staley’s defense. Many of the deficiencies that have plagued the Chargers’ defense were laid bare again in Sunday’s 36-34 loss to the Miami Dolphins.Giving up a ton of points? Check. It was the seventh time since Staley’s arrival in 2021 that Los Angeles has allowed at least 35 points, tied for second most in the league.Inability to get off the field on third-and-long? Check. The Dolphins converted three of six opportunities when they faced third down with more than 6 yards to go. The Chargers allowed opponents to convert 30.2% on third-and-long last season, the league’s fourth-highest conversion rate.Allowing big pass plays? Check. Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa had a league-high 14 completions of at least 16 yards on Sunday (the next closest was eight by Tampa Bay’s Baker Mayfield). LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Lionel Messi skipped Argentina’s last practice session on the eve of a World Cup qualifying match in Bolivia. The 36-year-old Inter Miami striker left Argentina’s match against Ecuador late last week complaining of fatigue, which could impact coach Lionel Scaloni’s selections for Tuesday’s match in challenging conditions at La Paz’ altitude of 3,000 meters.Scaloni told a news conference Sunday that he could leave a decision on Messi until a few hours before the match.During Monday’s training, Messi sat on a chair close to Scaloni and watched his teammates practice. He spoke to the coach as other players tried to adapt to the altitude and the quicker speed of the ball, which is a characteristic that makes it so hard for visitors to win at Bolivia.Scaloni gave no hints at the practice session on what he will do if Messi doesn’t play at the Hernando Siles Stadium against a team that was battered 5-1 by Brazil last week in ...California fast food workers to get $20 minimum wage under new deal between labor and the industry

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Most fast food workers in California would be paid at least $20 per hour next year under a new bill in the state Legislature aimed at ending a standoff between the industry and labor unions over wages and working conditions. California’s minimum wage is already among the highest in the country at $15.50 per hour. The bill, filed Monday with the blessing of both labor unions and the fast food industry, would increase the minimum wage to $20 per hour for workers at restaurants in California that have at least 60 locations nationwide — with an exception for restaurants that make and sell their own bread, like Panera Bread. The bill will impact about 500,000 fast food workers in California, according to the Service Employees International Union, which has been working to unionize fast food workers in the state. They include Ingrid Vilorio, who works at a Jack In The Box in the San Francisco Bay Area. She said the raise will help her family, who until recen...Jones replaces Scally on US soccer roster, Horvath to start in goal vs Oman
